The Sustainable Development Project for the Layer Chicken Industry in Saint Christopher and Nevis is aligned with the priority improvement areas outlined in the “2021–2031 Agricultural Transformation and Growth Strategy (Draft)” of the Ministry of Agriculture of Saint Christopher and Nevis, and responds to the international community’s emphasis on national food security and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: Zero Hunger, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. The project's creation of the Bayfords Hatchery seeks to enhance the operational and management capacity of the layer chicken industry on our twin island federation. The main components of the project include: (1) establishing sustainable layer chicken production capacity; and (2) establishing a sustainable operational model for the layer chicken industry.
At Bayfords Hatchery our main objective is to assist the egg economy on both islands by providing local Hy-Line chicks through sustainable chicken production. Chicks are available for sale at the Hatchery by minimum order of 100 chicks.
Bayfords Hatchery is the result of a need for an establishment to create sustainable layer chicken production capacity through the introduction of breeder chicken breeds and mating technologies such as one fertile egg incubation technology.
The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) through it's International Cooperation Development Fund (ICDF) collaborates with the Ministry of Agriculture of Saint Christopher and Nevis to create a technical cooperation project for upgrading the layer chicken industry on both islands. This collaboration tackles the absence of a local supply system for breeder layer chicks which has directly affected the stability of domestic egg supply and raised concerns regarding national food security. It is the intention of this joint venture to reduce dependence on imports and to construct a stable annual supply that will stimulate the Egg economy on both islands.
